Issues of long-term pollution?
A main pollution issue comes from the usage of plastics, tin, glass, and other substances that take long amounts of time to decompose in the natural environment. The trash currently being dumped can stay in the environment for decades. For example, an average grocery store plastic bag is estimated to take about 20 years to fully decompose. This is a big deal, considering that the United States goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. Also, plastic bottles are an issue. Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles per hour, which creates 1,500 pounds of trash per year that can be recycled easily. Objects like cans and bottles are expected to spend over 100 years decomposing in our landfills. And, it has been determined that Styrofoam is incapable of decomposing–it will just be resting in the environment until it is disposed of properly.
